General care of dogs and puppies

Postby Hooyaah on Wed Jun 23, 2010 11:51 am

It is very important that your dog or puppy have plenty of fresh water, especially if it is hot outside and they stay out for more than a few minutes. It very important not to overfeed your adult dog or they will get overweight. Consult your veterinarian about the amount that they should eat and measure their food in a cup, feeding them their daily dietary requirements in the morning at breakfast time and in the evening when you eat. If your pet eats when you do they should learn to eat their food and not "beg" at the table. Never feed your pet from the table as this encourages them to pester you when you eat.

Never allow your dog to eat candy. It is unhealthy for them and they may choke on hard candies, while chocolate is poisonous to them.

Do give your dog or puppy lots of love; they will return it double. Never strike them but praise them and reward them (only occasionally) with small treats that can be found at your local pet store. Learn to recognize your pet's special way of alerting you that it is time for them to go out to relieve themselves and you will both be happy.

For more information or if you have questions please feel free to PM me. I would be happy to help.

Thanks for the great tips hooyah... ;)
I have a dog too.
I treat my dog well.

Do not give medicines that is not recommended, such as aspirin, because it can cause death to dogs.
Take care of their nails clean and not too sharp.
Give them vaccines periodically.

Those are great tips also Shi-chan!

It is also good to softly and carefully wipe the inside of a dogs ears once every two weeks with a soft warm (not hot) and damp (not wet) wash rag. No soap should be used as it will leave a residue. Then carefully dry them with a soft dry cloth. Never push the cloth (damp or dry) deep into their ear as you could injure them. Just be gentle and you will do fine. It's also a good idea to bathe them that about every two weeks with "no-tears" baby shampoo. In the winter dry them very well and if they act cold cover them for a while with a blanket.

For a treat dogs usually learn to enjoy small, not tiny, pieces of ice. If you don't have crushed ice you can use a metal spoon to smash the ice in your cupped hand over the sink. Try this if the dog or puppy is hot and panting. It will help to cool them down. Dogs do not sweat but cool down by panting which makes their tongue cooler and which lowers their body temperature.

Thank you evelrika. I am knowledgeable about dogs. I love all animals and believe that people have a responsibility to treat them properly. If I can be of additional help to anyone I hope that they will ask me what they would like to learn.
I am here to be of assistance.
